Line graph illustrating Water consumption between 1900 and 2000. Table comparing Brazil and Congo
The
depicted graph illustrates the changes in water consumption by three sectors
namely, farming, industry and household over a period of 100 years, i.e. from
1900 to 2000.
In
1900 water consumption in agriculture was under 1000 cu.kms while demand in
industry and household sectors was much less than agriculture sector.
From
1900 to 1940 not much changes were noticed in demand for water in all three
sectors. In the next 30 year period, (1940-1970) the consumption in agriculture
rose steeply, while demand in manufacturing and domestic sectors rose steadily.
Between 1970 to 2000 demand further rose significantly in farming while
consumption doubled in manufacturing sector, thogh domestic usage registered a
steady rise.
Similarly,
the table compares the per-capita water consumption of Brazil and Congo in year
2000 in relation to population and area of arable land. The figures highlight that Brazil has a much
higher per capita water consumption than Congo because of higher population and
large land parcel of arable land.
To
conclude, farming sector has remained largest user of water with consumption
rising three folds in a century which is illustrated by example of Brazil and Congo.
