Ielts Academic - Graphs Urbanized Population 

The given bar chart illustrates trends of urbanization of population across the globe, and specifically in five regions.

Less than 1/3rd world population was in urban areas in 50’s, which almost doubled in 2007. But, the speed of urbanization is expected to slow down in next decade.

In 1950’s, more than half of population in North America, 64%, and Europe,51%, was urbanized, while in 42% Latin Americans lived in urbanized locations. Asia and Africa had less than 1/5th of population in urban centers, 17% and 15% respectively.

By 2015, urbanized population almost doubled in Latin America, 78%, Asia, 41%, and Africa – 37%. Quite strikingly, Europe, North and Latin Americas found 3/4th of population in urban centers, less than 50% Asian and Africans chose to live in cities.

By 2030, close to 90% of population – North American,87%, Latin Americans, 84% - would be living in urban surroundings, while a little more than 3 quarters, 78%,  Europeans would be urbanized. In Asia and Africa though only half of population would be urbanized.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant. Write at least 150 words.  
Ielts Academic Writing Task 1 - Energy use in Australian Homes 

The given pie chart and the table indicate at the percentage of electricity used for purposes by Australians at their homes and units of power consumed by families of varying sizes.  

A major share of energy, 63%, is consumed cumulatively by activities such as Heating and cooling – 38%, and water heating – 25%. This is followed by other appliances such as clothes and dish washers, 16%. Lighting and freezers use 7% each, while cooking and stand-by power use negligible amount, 4% and 3% respectively.


The table clearly illustrates that per capita consumption of energy decreases as the number of family member rises.  This is clearly elaborated by the comparable figures, like while a family with one member uses 5000-6500 KWH annually, families having 2 members use only slightly higher between 6000 to 8000 KWH per year. Similarly, families having 3 members consume between 7500  to 10000 KWH in a year and where 6 or more family member reside that household consume between 12000 to 16000 KWH annually.

Ielts Academic Writing task 1 - Coastal Village 
The given diagrams depict the changes in a coastal village after its development into a big European tourist resort, between 1974 and 2004.

It can be easily observed that the fishing village and surrounding areas underwent a sea change in a matter of 3 decades. The population of this area rose from 12000 to 80,000, and it swells to 130,000 during the tourist season.

The village itself witnessed an expansion, as construction of new tourist shops was done to cater to the tourists. Besides this, what used to be a harbor in 1974 gave way to beaches. The beaches are now lined up by high rise hotels that cover most of the coastline, and also surround the fishing village.

The natural woodlands and olive orchids were also replaced by golf course, for tourists, and farmlands, that feed the travelers, respectively. The pastures also disappeared.

A road was also constructed to connect this region with other parts of the world, and this runs from the beach and through the village.

The given charts illustrate destination of graduates and post graduates who did not join employment after completing college in 2008.

The information depicted in both the charts clearly indicates at similar trends in terms of activities taken up by graduates and post graduates. The data shows that most of the graduates, 29665, and post graduates, 2725 chose to study further. The number of graduates taking up part-time work was 17735, a good 40% less than those pursuing higher studies.

This was followed by students pursuing graduation and post graduation going in for part time employment even though the number of post graduates, 2535, taking up part-time jobs was only slightly less than those taking up further studies.

The third most important strata was of those who remained without work: 16235 graduates and 1625 post graduates.

The inclination to take up voluntary services seemed  be to be on the last priority for both categories of pupils, only 3500 graduates and 345 post graduates chose to offer voluntary services.

The given charts indicate changes in support for different political parties over a period of 13 months, before and after elections. The government was formed by an alliance of conservatives and liberal democrats after elections.

The charts indicate at a fluctuating trend in support for all parties in the 13 month period. The dramatic changes were noticed in case of conservatives that emerged as a single largest party with a mandate of 41%. The support for surged to 45% in next six months, but later declined to 35%.
Similarly, the green party also witnessed a loss of support to half, from 10% to 5% though it was able to hold its support base for first six months.

The fortunes of coalition partners, the liberal democrats dwindled over the corresponding period dipping to less that 50%, from 19% to 8%.

However, the support for   labor party swelled in this period rising from 26% to 32%. The number of people not supporting any party also rose 5 folds from 4% to 20%.

The given chart indicates at the percentage of the speakers of Irish Language in 4 different states of Ireland, namely Leinster, Munster, Connacht, and Ulster, and the country as a whole.

It can clearly observed from the trends indicated in graph that the population of speakers of Irish language increased at a very slow rate between 1981 and 1991 in all four states, as well as the country, Leinster registered even a fall between 1981 and 1986.

There was a spurt in number of speakers of native language between 1991-1996, highest being in Munster, 10%. The nation also recorded a healthy rise. From 1996 to 2002 the rise in all states was negligible.

The figures also present a striking fact that Connacht had highest number of speakers throughout the quoted period, 38%and 48%; followed by Munster, though this state witnessed highest growth in number of Irish speakers; and Ulster recording second highest growth rate of 12%. Leinster had least number of speakers throughout that were even below the national averages.

The given bar charts illustrate data of activities of the British students who did not join full time employment after completion of their studies in 2008. The graphs highlight comparable figures of the graduate and post graduate students.

The figures and the chart clearly indicate that more of both graduates and post graduates had an inclination to go for higher studies, 29665 graduates and 2725 post graduates taking up advanced courses.

Almost a similar number of post graduates,2535 took, up part-time  jobs, while it is observed that graduates were not as keen to take up part time employment, only 17735 went to such work.

The third most popular destination of the students who did not take up regular jobs after completion of their studies was remaining jobless, 16235 graduates, and 1625 post graduates, chose not to take up jobs.

Volunteer jobs attracted least number of graduates,3500 and post graduates, 345.


To sum up, the trend of choosing venues by unemployed graduates and post graduates was similar.

The chart below shows information about the percentage of economic activity accounted for by (i) Agriculture, (ii) Manufacturing, and (iii) Services Sectors for the whole world and different parts of the world.

The given graph shows contributions of different sectors, namely agriculture, manufacturing and services sectors, in economic activity in Asia, Africa, Europe, North America, South America and in the world.

It can be observed that manufacturing has a major contribution to economic activity across the world, approximately 45%, followed by farming, 30%, and tertiary approximately 25%.  A similar pattern is observed in case of Asia though secondary sector has an overwhelming contribution with 70% followed in by primary sector approximately 22% and tertiary around 8%.

Almost similarly, Europe and North America also have major contributions from secondary sectors, 50% and approximately 43%, but services sector is a second major contributor in these regions, especially in North America services follows in close with 42%.

In contrast, South American region gets equal contributions from primary and secondary sectors, 40% each, and 20% from tertiary sector.


On the other hand, economic activity in Africa is dominated by primary sector, 60%, followed by manufacturing,30%, and services 10%.

The given graph clearly illustrates information about energy consumption, 1980-2015 and projections till 2030, by comparing use of conventional and non-conventional fuels.

The use of petrol witnessed a rise between 1980 and 2015 from 35q to 45q with some minor fluctuations between 1980 and 1995. The consumption of coal and natural gas registered similar trend to that of petrol rising from 16q and 20q respectively to 25q respectively. The projections up to 2030 indicate that while use of coal may rise, the consumption of natural gas would be stagnant.

However, the use of non-conventional resources, like nuclear – rising from 2q in 1980 to 7q in 2015, and wind and solar –increasing from 2q to 5q, did see some rise in past 35 years, but use of hydro power has remained stable. The use of these resources is expected to stay same over next 15 years.

Overall, reliance on conventional energy sources has been overwhelming, while use of non-conventional energy resources is stagnant and may continue to continue similarly till 2030.

The given graphs illustrate changes in number of inhabitants residing in rural, urban and suburban areas between years 1900 to 2050 in the Northwest.

The population in rural areas declined in the last century by almost 45 million, from approximately 65 million in 1990 to 20 million in 2000. The figures for the first half of the 21st century, till 2050, suggest that the population in regional areas may further decline to 10 million.

However, the trends of population living in sub-urban areas indicate a completely reverse trend. At the start of 20th century 10 million people were residing in sub-urban areas. It doubled up twice in 100 years, to 20 millions in 1950 and 40 millions in 2000. In 2000 an equal number of people were living in urban and suburban areas. The population in next 50 years is expected to reach almost 60 millions.


In contrast, population registered a gradual rise in urban areas in last century – from 1900 to 2000, but is expected to decline in next 5 decades.

The given pie chart and table illustrate the reasons for the deterioration of arable land, and three regions, namely North America, Europe and Oceania, affected by the quoted reasons.

Overuse of land for grazing was a major cause of deterioration in quality of arable land, amounting to 35% of total land lost. Oceania and Europe were worst affected regions by this activity, with Oceania losing over 90% land out of 13% total land lost and Europe losing more than 1/4th of total land lost (23%).

Clearing of forests was next major reason for the loss of agricultural land (30%). Europe was badly affected, losing almost 1/3rd (7.7%) of total land lost. North America also, was affected, it lost majority of land owing to agriculture.  

Deforestation was followed by use of land for cultivation. Agriculture resulted in a loss of 28% of the land. This factor affected Europe the most.


Other miscellaneous reasons accounted for a loss of 7% of total cultivable land.

The given pie charts illustrate changes in the ratio of British students at a English university between 2000 and 2010.

It can be clearly observed from both the graphs that the ratio of the students who could not speak any other language except English rose from 30% in 2000 to 35% in 2010.

A similar trend was observed in case of another language and two other languages besides English. There was an increase 5% each the quoted period, from 15% to 20% and from 10% to 15% .

On the other hand, proportion of students with multilingual abilities in French or Spanish, apart from English witnessed a decline of 5% (from 15% to 10%) and 10% (from 20% to 10%) respectively though the fall in number of students with ability to use Spanish was steeper.


In the contrast to above quoted trends, the number of English pupils with an ability to community in German besides English remained similar, 10% in corresponding period.

The given table illustrates the outcomes of a survey carried out to gauge the satisfaction levels of the members of a club, in relation to various services and facilities offered by the club.

It can be clearly observed that an overwhelming number of men (95%) were happy (55% very happy and 40% happy) with the range of activities offered at the club, while 30% were not content – 70% reported that they were happy with the range of activities provided.

On the other hand, a majority of females (97% total 72% very happy and 25% happy) were pleased with the opening hours of the club, whereas one thirds of men expressed reservations – only two thirds of the men found the opening times of the clubs satisfactory.

One aspect where the male (86%) and female members (89%) members seemed to agree was the club facilities, and only 14% males and 10% females expressed dissatisfaction over this issue.

Overall, more males favored range of activities while women liked opening hours of the club.

Ielts Academic Task 1 - Use of Energy in American Households 
The given charts discuss the proportionate usage of energy in American households, for various purposes, and greenhouse gases released due to use of energy.

It is clearly observed that most of power (72% cumulatively) is consumed by Americans for heating (42%) and water heating (30%). Both of these activities combined generate less that 50% green house emissions (32% is attributed to water heating and 15% to heating).

Similarly, the amount of power consumed for cooling is barely 2%, while percentage of gases released amount to a marginal 3%.

On the other hand, equipment used for refrigeration and lighting, and other appliances use 7%, 4% and 2%, and 15% respectively – 50% cumulatively. The use of power in these activities and appliances result in a high percentage of release of green house gases, in case of refrigeration and lighting the percentage of green house gases is double, 14% and 8% respectively, of energy used. The gases emitted by other appliances are also almost double the amount of power used.

The bar graph shows the net worth (in million Euros) of various sectors in UK between 2005 and 2014. Summarize the information for the lecturer of university by quoting important information. Write at least 150 words.

The given graph shows changes in the net worth (in million Euros) of various sectors in UK between 2005 and 2014, namely household, government, businesses and UK as a whole.

The net worth of domestic sector remained steady between 2005 and 2007, and registered a rise to over 6000   in 2011(from 4500). The figures of UK as a total indicated at a similar trend in corresponding period – rising from   4000   to   6000.

Both the household and UK total worth continued with an almost identical trend while substantially dipping by almost 500   (5200 and  5500 respectively) in 2012.

While the net worth of household registered a rise in 2013 and further rose to   6000   in 2014, the UK’s total worth further dipped in 2013 to   5200 and finally rising to 6000  .  

The net worth of the government registered a steady overall rise in the quoted period.

The net worth of business witnessed negative trends even though the situation improving a little in 2014, but not before experiencing decline in 2010.

Write a summary on the functioning of a solar power water pump in at least 150 words.

The given diagram depicts the function of a solar power water pump

The solar power water pumps uses solar energy which is produced by photovoltaic cells installed in the solar panel. There cells use energy of the sun derived from the sun rays.

The solar panels generate direct current power which is supplied to the bore pump underground. The bore pump is install and submerged in the water in the underground boring which is also known as bore well. When the bore pump is operated with the help of electricity generated by solar panels it pumps up water from the underground resources.

The water pumps from the natural underground reservoirs of water can be stored in the water tank. This water drawn from the underground reservoir can be put to use by the people of village as per requirement.

The process of drawing water from the underground reservoir is very simple, non polluting as an energy efficient system and can proved to be quite cost effective in the long run.

Ielts Writing Task 1 - Sale or Lunch and Dinner at a restaurant

The table below shows the sale of lunch and dinner at a restaurant at the business district between October 7 and 13, 2007.

The given table depicts the sales registered at lunch and dinner at  a small restaurant in the downtown business district between October 7 to 13, 2007.

The trends for order place for lunch clearly indicate that more and more people tended to have lunch at the restaurant in the middle of the week, on the Wednesday.

The sales on the rest of weekdays hovered between $2375 on Thursday and $2500 on Friday, and dropped below $2500 on weekends, with Sunday registering only $1550.

However, lesser and lesser number of people opted for dinner at the restaurant in the middle of the week. The sales rose as the week advanced with Friday registering the highest sales.

The sale of dinner witnessed similar trend to that of lunch, with Saturday and Sundays registering lowest sales $1900 and $1450 respectively.


To conclude, more and more people tended to have lunch as the mid of the week approached and highest number of people dined out as the weekend approached.

The given line graph depicts comparable changes in ratio of individuals aged 65 and older in Japan, The USA, Switzerland.

The ratio of senior citizens in population of USA was about 9% in 1940. The changes in the demographic trends indicate clearly that the ratio older people in the population is set to rise to about 23% by 2040 even though the population of old people stabilized at 15% in 1980, and in fact is expected to decline marginally till 2020.

Similarly, the ratio of the old people in the Switzerland is also expected register a rise of approximately 19% by 2040 – from about 7% in 1940 to 26% in 2040.

On the other hand, even though the ratio of aged Japanese was lowest in 1940 – 5%, and it further declined to below 5% till 1990, it is expected to rise more than five folds in corresponding period, to more than 27%.


The proportion of old people would rise in all the 3 countries in the quoted 100 period.

The given graphs depict the inclination of men and women, in Britain, of different age groups to buying different genre of music, namely pop, rock and classical.

While men lead women in buying all kinds of music genre, the interest of individuals in the age group 16 to 44, and 45 and above, reflects similar trends in terms of buying pop and rock music: least number or people aged 45 and above go for these genre (below 10%);  approximately 15% of in age group 16-24; slightly less than 30% people aged between 25-34 years; and peaks at age 35-44 years 30% individuals.

Quite contrary to the trends in pop and rock, a sharp rise in inclination for classical is noticed among people aged 45 years and above – they led other age groups. They are followed by individuals in 25-34 years. A significant fall in interest in noticed among other age groups.


In the nutshell, while pop and rock music are preferred more by young British, older Britons like classical.

The given chart presents information about the levels of donations made by US nationals of different age categories between 1995 and 2015.

In 1995, a major part of contributions towards donations came from people aged between 18 years and 50 years, in which, the highest percentage of donations – 45 percent – came from US nationals aged between 36-50 years; followed by people aged between 26-35 years – 35 percent; and 18-35 year old making a contribution of  17%.

By 2015, there was a sharp decline in contributions made by people of these age groups to 35%, 27% and 12% respectively.

On the other hand, the inclination to donate among the older age groups rose in the corresponding period. The percentage of donations from people aged between 50-65 years increased from 35% to 42% , and the percentage of money channelized into charities, by people over 65 years, registered a climb of approximately 6% (from 32% to 38%).


Overall, there was a decline in donations in these two years, twenty years apart.
